James is going to call out a sin that had been taking place throughout many Christian Jewish synagogues which is hurting a certain group in the church, namely poor Jewish people who came to see what this Jesus thing was all about.
What was happening was that the congregants were treating the rich visitors with special treatment while the poor got pushed to the side. The message was clear, the poor were to get the same treatment as the world gave them, that is disrespect and poor treatment.
This was unlike the Jesus of the Gospels who elevated the poor and made them citizens of heaven. Perhaps some of the poor never returned and didn’t want anything to do with this kind of Jesus and His people. It was apparent to them that the church was not a safe place.
