As you may know, the Bible is the most amazing document the world will ever see. Its supernatural compilation of sixty-six books unlocks the mysteries of the universe. What you might have not considered are the many literary genres it employs to bring God’s message of hope, salvation, and purpose to you the believer. Accurate historical accounts, parables, proverbs, songs, and letters are but a few of its literary devices. One of the least known, yet most powerful forms of literary devices in the Bible is called parenesis. Okay, it looks like a hard word to pronounce, it kind of sounds like a pair-of-nieces. Parenesis is employed when a ton of significant spiritual wisdom is to be delivered quickly in a short concise manner. Romans 12 is an explosive use of parenesis providing tremendous insights on living the Christian life.
